Did you know that Sacramento has some of the best cycling environments in California? It's true. Whether you're a occasional enthusiast or an every-chance-you-get type, you'll find something for you and your friends in Sacramento.
Riding around the downtown area is one of the most enjoyable ways you can enjoy a summer outing. There's plenty to observe from Old Town to the Fabulous Forties and beyond. And you are truly missing out unless you get onto our famous American River bike trails at least once in a while. It's absolutely amazing. I recently rode from the La Rivage in South Sacramento thru downtown all the way to Nimbus Dam - it was both exhilarating and exhausting! I saw, in no particular order: deer, wild turkey, groundhogs, jack rabbits, quail and more. It was just amazing. Here's what Wikipedia writes about the trail:
"The Jedediah Smith Memorial Trail (or American River Bike Trail) is a paved multi-use pathway that runs between the confluence of the Sacramento River with the American River, just north of downtown Sacramento, CA, and Beal's Point at Folsom Lake, north of Folsom, CA. The trail is 32 miles (51 km) long, and is used as a major recreational destination, as well as a commuter artery for cyclists. The trail is considered one of the longest paved purpose-built bike trails in the country. The trail is maintained by the County of Sacramento and is painted with mile markers placed at every half-mile increment."
So, I suggest you plan a weekend and get one or two friends together and get out there to do some biking. It's great exercise, relaxing and fun all at once.
