Active Safety Technology

When it comes to safety, Volvo has always been very single-minded. But while those riding in a Volvo are well protected there's still a risk to the less fortunate outside. That's why, with a declared vision that "by 2020, nobody should be killed or seriously injured in a new Volvo" their engineers are now working on "active safety".

"Active safety" means equipping the vehicle with sensors that let it anticipate an accident and take appropriate action. This began in earnest back in 2010 when Volvo debuted their pedestrian detection system. (There's a great video on the Cnet website.) Since then they've been hard at work refining and adding to it's capabilities.

Earlier this year cyclist detection technology was announced, and according to Automobile magazine, by 2015 this will work in the dark. Plus, there will be a system to watch for the edge of the road, and "steer assist" will be added to the cruise control capabilities.
