Autonomous Driving by Volvo

Volvo is bring its robo-car army to its home country of Sweden, with 100 autonomous vehicles taking to the roads of Gothenburg in the next three years.

The program is called “Drive Me”, and in collaboration with the Swedish Transport Administration, the Swedish Transport Agency, and the Lindholmen Science Park, Volvo will put 100 autonomous cars onto the roads of Gothenburg in 2017.

“Autonomous vehicles are an integrated part of Volvo Cars’ as well as the Swedish government’s vision of zero traffic fatalities,” says Volvo president and CEO Håkan Samuelsson. “It will give us an insight into the technological challenges at the same time as we get valuable feedback from real customers driving on public roads.”

New Volvo Engine: Extreme Power Delivered Efficiently

At our manufacturer, new Volvo parts often aim to please your average urban driver. Volvo's S60 engine is no different. While still in development, this anticipated prototype can be described as " a turbocharged four-cylinder... that accelerates to 100 kmh (62 mph) in 5.5 seconds." (ExtremeTech) While anyone can certainly appreciate that kind of power, some of its more technical features can leave common drivers scratching their heads. But fear not. We at Turner Volvo of Sacramento are here to break it down and explain why this is relevant to you.

The S60 relies on an innovative flywheel system in the rear wheels. When the driver brakes, the momentum charges the flywheel up to 60,000 rpm. This energy is utilized as the driver takes off, adding nearly 80 HP and 25% better fuel economy to the engine. By creating large amounts of power for just a few seconds, a car can get up to speed quickly and safely in fast moving traffic.

New Volvo Commercial: For Real People

A new Volvo marketing campaign was released in April and we at Turner Volvo in Sacramento thought it would be a good opportunity to weigh in on the commercial's central message: "Designed for real people. Designed around you."

We have always felt that there is something special about owning a Volvo. Volvo service is second-to-none and Volvo parts are infamously built for reliability and safety. But the personality of a car is often the reflection of its driver and we know that there is something special when it comes to Volvo owners. Forbes seems to sum it up quite perfectly:  "[Volvo] appeals to the non-materialistic, minimalist ethos that... differentiates Volvo aficionados from buyers of other luxury and near-luxury brands."

Kids are welcome at the Turner Volvo Lemon Ride

On October 14th Turner Volvo will be hosting the Lemon Ride, a charity bike ride to benefit Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation. ALSF raises money for pediatric cancer research and was founded based on the actions of one four-year-old girl, Alexandra Scott.

The Lemon Ride is an easy, fun ride - not a speedy race - so it is perfect for kids. The shortest route is 10 miles, but families with children are encouraged to participate and ride for as far as they are comfortable. We'll also have some great kid-friendly activities and healthy refreshments, so bring the whole family!

All riders will get some great gear from Volvo, and the top three fundraisers will get awesome Lemon Ride t-shirts. We'll also be holding a raffle for riders and spectators alike, so you can enter to win other great prizes and more t-shirts!

"So, if I buy a Volvo this summer, I get a free trip to Europe?"  I had a friend visit me at Turner Volvo one recent afternoon and she was really questioning me on the Overseas Delivery Program.

"Really?" she said.  "No catches."

"No," I said, "there's no catch.  If you buy a new Volvo from Turner Volvo, if it's part of the program, you and one other person can go."
